For those of you who are relatively new to the club, we thought it would be helpful to explain a little bit about FinS.

FinS stands for Friends in Swimming and was launched about 3 years ago to help with social and fundraising aspects of the club and, at present, it is run by a handful of volunteer parents. It is a little like a swimming version of a school PTA. We have organised the last 3 Presentation Evenings and fundraising aspects of galas held at WSSC (raffles, swim shop, other stalls, BBQ, photographer, drinks and snacks). We’ve done bag packing at Tesco’s, carol singing at Christmas and held summer BBQ’s and picnics amongst other things. So far some of the money raised has gone back into social events for the children, eg Summer BBQ and Presentation Evenings.

However, Dan Pilbrow (Head Coach) requested an underwater video camera for training purposes as well as a smaller, simpler version for taking on training camps or to galas. This was the first major purchase made with the money raised by FinS. We have also shared the cost with Culford for 2 Speedo clocks for the Culford Pool. This year we helped to keep the costs of the club championships down by paying for the medals and trophies and we will be paying for new backstroke flags for Culford and Haverhill.

We hold occasional meetings to plan and arrange events but often this is done by email or chatting on poolside as there are, at present, so few parents involved. There is no pressure to attend meetings or to do onerous jobs – just your contribution of ideas would be very welcome. These meetings are very informal and everyone is welcome to attend them. Please look on WSSC website for meeting dates/times. Even donating raffle prizes or baking cakes for us to sell at events will help immensely, as would sparing an hour at a gala to assist on the BBQ or to sell raffle tickets or coffees. No-one wants to miss their children swim – so the more that are willing to help at galas the better.
